[The Glory Unveiled]
“But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. [ Matthew 22:11 NKJV ]
Garments are often symbols of identity, association, and belonging. Institutions establish dress codes because appearance communicates alignment and identification. In the same way, in the parable of the wedding banquet, the king prepared a feast and opened the invitation to anyone willing to come after the original guests rejected it. Yet when the king entered the banquet hall, he found a man without the proper wedding garment. Though invited freely, the man was confronted and cast out into outer darkness because he refused to align himself with the honour and order of the banquet. This reveals an important truth about the Kingdom of God. The invitation is free, but alignment is required. The man did not enter the banquet because he deserved it; he entered by grace. In the same way, we are brought into Christ not by qualification, merit, or works, but by grace alone. However, grace is not permission for carelessness. The same grace that invites us also calls us into transformation and responsibility. Once we are brought into the banquet of Christ, we are expected to wear the right garment. Scripture calls it the garment of righteousness. This is the life that reflects our union with Christ. It is the posture of a heart that honours the King who invited us. Our responsibility toward this free gift does not earn our place at the table; rather, it validates the reality of the calling we have received in Christ Jesus. We do not have the luxury of treating our garment casually simply because the invitation was free. We must be intentional about our identity in Christ. We must daily put on righteousness, holiness, humility, obedience, and the character of Christ Himself. The invitation is by grace, but the garment still matters. So the question is: do you have the right garment on? The garment of righteousness.
