[The Glory Unveiled]
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” ( John 8:31-32 )
The statement in the second part of today’s devotional scripture is used repeatedly and so often that we tend not to see the realities in them. But the reality is that, we come to know the truth and experience true freedom only when we hold to the teachings of Jesus. There is no other way around it. Interestingly, the statement was made to “religious Believers” in His day; to Jews. And the average Jew in Jesus’ day was religious. So this meant that they had knowledge of a lot of things in the Torah. But Jesus says in effect, what we know in and about the Bible does not bring freedom [and eternal life]. Another thing worthy of note is the fact that these Jews had believed (put their faith) in Jesus, meaning they had been converted. Now, this is where the challenge comes in. Many of us, Believers, think that the fact that we believe in the Lord Jesus as Saviour exempt us from slavery to mental and often emotional and psychological slavery. Unfortunately, our devotion today explains that believing is not the end. We need to hold to the teachings of the Lord Jesus. We need to hold to the teachings and words of Jesus and more so as Believers. It it only then we are guaranteed to know the truth and freedom.
Prayer_Bead: Father in Heaven, thank you for the freedom that comes from holding to the words of Jesus Christ. I pray that you would keep me in the centre of your will for my life.
