Yoked with Christ

For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”[ Matthew 11:30 NKJV ]

Who told us that coming to Christ means entering a life free from responsibility and labour? Somewhere along the way, many have mistaken Christian freedom for the absence of obligation. But that is not the invitation of Jesus. When Jesus called us to Himself, He never promised a life without burdens. Instead, He spoke of a yoke and a burden (Matthew 11:28–30). This tells us that everyone who follows Him will carry something. The difference is not whether there is a burden, but whose burden it is. Jesus assures us that His burden is light. It is not crushing, oppressive, or impossible to bear. It is a burden that can be carried with grace because it is carried in union with Him. Yet before He spoke of His burden, He first spoke of His yoke. That order is significant. We cannot carry His burden unless we are first yoked to Him. A yoke joins two together so they move in the same direction. To be yoked with Christ is to be bound to Him—to walk where He walks, to love what He loves, and to do what He does. Apart from that union, we cannot follow His steps or participate in His work. What, then, is His burden? It is the joyful responsibility of doing the Father’s will. It is living for His Kingdom, advancing His purposes, and embracing His mission as our own. His yoke keeps us close to Him, and His burden gives our lives divine purpose. We are yoked to Christ by the Holy Spirit when we surrender to His Lordship. Through faith, we are brought into His family, made heirs with Him, and united to His life. From that place of union, we receive both the strength to walk with Him and the grace to carry what He entrusts to us. So the question is not whether you are carrying a burden. The question is: Whose burden are you carrying? Are you yoked to Jesus, or are you pulling the weight of your own ambitions?

The source of all things

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ [ Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV ]

There is more to reality than all we know, see, or understand. Even if we possessed every degree, mastered every principle, and understood every theory, there would still be far more we do not know than what we do. That is because there are dimensions of knowledge that belong to God alone. Unless He reveals them, no amount of human effort can uncover them. The bridge between what we know and what we have yet to know is calling upon God. We step into divine revelation by calling on Him. As He declares, “Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jeremiah 33:3). Every answer from God is an invitation into greater knowledge. He unveils mysteries, grants fresh encounters, and leads us into experiences beyond the reach of human understanding. So, call upon God. Do not spend your life chasing what only God can give. Chase God, and He will bring you into the knowledge, encounters, and realities you could never have discovered on your own. Seek the Giver, and the gifts will follow.

God knows

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. [ Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV ]

Many are the plans in our hearts. Our preferences change, our desires shift, and we pursue things we believe will give us meaning, fulfilment, and peace—only to discover that they are but vapour. In contrast, God declares, “I know the plans I have for you.” He not only knows them; He reveals their nature: plans of peace and not of evil, to give you a future filled with hope. Amazingly, what God has prepared for us is exactly what we spend our lives searching for. This reveals a profound truth: what we truly need is found in God alone. He sees the end from the beginning. Every decision, every path, and every possible outcome lies open before Him. He knows which choices lead us closer to His purpose and which draw us away from the very things our hearts long for. God not only desires the best for us; He alone has the wisdom and power to bring us into the reality of it. His purpose is not merely for us to imagine peace, hope, and fulfilment, but to experience them. Therefore, let us abandon our weary and fruitless search and turn our hearts to God. The One who authored our future is the only One who can faithfully lead us into it.

Highly valued

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. [ 1 Corinthians 6:20 NKJV ]

Anything that can be bought has value. Its value determines its price, whether that price is visible or not. At an auction, buyers assign a price to an item based on what they believe it is worth. The higher the price, the greater its perceived value. Yet there is a deeper mystery: the buyer does not ultimately determine the item’s worth. Rather, the item itself declares its value, and the buyer simply responds to it. Once purchased, that possession brings the buyer a measure of satisfaction and fulfillment. The same principle applies to humanity. We were purchased from the auction house of the devil, and the price paid for our redemption was the life of God’s beloved Son. In other words, we were bought at the cost of our Redeemer’s own life. The Lord Jesus surrendered His life to purchase ours. Consider the magnitude of that price. Consider the value it places on your life. Such an immeasurable price places an unspoken responsibility upon us as God’s purchased possession. Our lives must reflect the value revealed by the price He paid. Scripture therefore calls us to glorify God in our bodies, for they belong to Him. To glorify Him is to yield our bodies to His purposes, using them only for what pleases Him and advances His will. May the One who purchased us find delight in His possession. May our lives bring Him satisfaction, reflecting the worth He placed upon us. Let us never live in a way that dishonours the price of our redemption, but rather be wholly useful to the One who bought us.

Swallowed into His life

And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. [ Genesis 5:24 NKJV ]

God calls us to walk with Him, not merely to accompany Him but to be absorbed into His very life. The ultimate purpose of walking with God is transformation. The longer we walk with Him, the more we become like Him. His character, nature, and life begin to rub off on us until His image is reflected through ours. This was evident in the lives of the disciples. Even the sceptics and enemies of the gospel recognised that they had been with Jesus because they looked like Him. That is why Jesus first called His disciples to be with Him before He sent them. Ministry flows from likeness, and likeness is born out of fellowship. Enoch walked with God, and he was no more, for God took him. His walk with God so consumed him that his own identity, habits, and way of life were swallowed up in God’s. This is the destiny of every believer who walks intimately with the Lord—not merely to know Him, but to be conformed to Him. As you walk with God, may your old identity fade away, and may He clothe you with His own.

Spiritually aware

So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” [ 2 Kings 6:16 NKJV ]

In our journey with God, spiritual maturity brings us to a place of deeper awareness. We become increasingly sensitive. We begin to discern the realities that exist beyond what our natural eyes can see. Awareness changes the dynamics of every situation, whether physical or spiritual and produces confidence and stability. This was the posture of Elisha when the Syrian army surrounded him and his servant. While his servant saw only the threat before them, Elisha saw a different reality. He was not shaken, he was not overwhelmed, and he was not consumed by panic. He remained calm because his confidence was not rooted in the strength of his circumstances but in the power and presence of God. Elisha was settled in one truth: God’s ability to deliver was greater than the enemy’s ability to threaten. When his servant became afraid, Elisha did not simply tell him, “Do not fear.” He gave him a reason: “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them”. Elisha understood that the greatest battle was not the army surrounding them; it was the fear that had surrounded the heart of his servant. Fear has a way of distorting reality. It magnifies what is against us and blinds us to what God has made available to us. The protection of God is not sustained by the absence of challenges but by the presence of faith in the midst of challenges. Elisha’s instruction was not merely a command to avoid an emotion; it was a call to recognise a greater reality. When we become aware of who God is, where He stands, and what He has made available to us, our response to life changes. We stop reacting to threats and start resting in God’s presence. We stop being intimidated by what surrounds us because we have become conscious of the One who surrounds us.

God will answer

He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. [ Psalms 91:15 NKJV ]

There is a kind of person whose cry God answers. When they call upon Him, He responds. He is with them in trouble, delivers them, honours them, and ultimately satisfies them with His salvation. This truth should cause us to pause and reflect, because it also reveals that God does not respond to everyone in the same way. Not every voice that calls upon Him is heard in the manner that receives these covenant promises. Many people pray every day, yet Scripture reveals that only some kind of people enjoy the fullness of His response. God is not moved by desperation alone; He is moved by hearts that are rightly positioned before Him.The preceding verse uncovers the foundation of these promises: “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him” (Psalm 91:14). Every promise that follows—including answered prayer, divine presence in trouble, deliverance, honour, long life, and salvation—rests upon this one condition: a heart that is steadfastly set upon God. To set your love upon the Lord is to make Him your greatest affection, highest pursuit, and deepest delight. It is to value Him above His gifts, to seek His presence above His provision, and to remain devoted to Him whether life is easy or difficult. Such a person has God’s attention. Their prayers carry weight because their hearts belong to Him. Instead of merely crying to God when trouble arises, let us first cultivate a life that is deeply in love with Him. When our hearts are set upon the Lord, we position ourselves within the pathway of His covenant promises. Then, when we call, He answers. When we are in trouble, He is with us. When we need deliverance, He delivers. And when He acts, He does so with honour and everlasting salvation.

Refrigerating Grace

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.[ 1 Corinthians 15:10 NKJV ]

The grace of God can indeed be wasted in our lives. Scripture warns us not to receive the grace of God in vain, reminding us that grace is not merely something to admire but something to steward. Grace is God’s enabling power, and it must be partnered with faithful obedience and diligent labour. God’s grace is like a divine system that refrigerates opportunities, abilities, and possibilities. What would have been lost is preserved. What time appears to have stolen can be redeemed. What seems beyond recovery can, by grace, be restored. The grace of God has a remarkable way of preserving opportunities until we are prepared to walk in them. The life of the apostle Paul illustrates this truth with striking clarity. By every human measure, he appeared late to the stage of his calling. Others had walked with Christ before him and had entered the work long before he did. Yet, by the end of his ministry, Paul had accomplished extraordinary exploits for the Kingdom. How did he explain such a life? He pointed to one thing—the grace of God. “By the grace of God I am what I am… yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10). That grace empowered him to labour more abundantly than the rest. It did not make him passive; it made him productive. It supplied the strength to recover what seemed lost, redeem the years, and fulfil God’s assignment with unwavering intensity. That same grace is at work in every believer today. However, we must not become complacent because grace is available. Grace is not an excuse for inactivity; it is God’s empowerment for action. It calls us to rise, to labour faithfully, and to pursue His purpose with renewed strength. If we cooperate with the grace God has given us, we will discover that what seemed delayed is not denied, what appeared wasted can be redeemed, and what looked impossible can become a testimony of His unfailing power.

Knowing through obedience

I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.” [ John 1:31 NKJV ]

Sometimes the assignments God gives us are not isolated acts; they are the beginning of a divine chain of events. What appears to be a single act of obedience may be God’s mechanism for setting a spiritual snowball effect in motion. One obedient response can create ripple effects that reach far beyond what we can presently see. John the Baptist understood this. He came baptising with water because God had told him that this would be the means by which the Messiah would be revealed to Israel. Baptising with water was never the ultimate goal; it was simply the instrument God chose to unveil Christ to a nation. John’s obedience became the doorway through which Israel encountered her Messiah. This is the mystery of obedience. God rarely reveals the full extent of what hangs on our “yes.” What seems ordinary to us may be the trigger for God’s next great agenda. A simple act of obedience today may become the catalyst for countless lives to experience His purpose tomorrow. Therefore, do not withhold your obedience simply because you cannot yet see the outcome. God does not require complete understanding before He requires obedience. More often than not, understanding follows obedience. Notice John’s testimony. As he obeyed the Lord’s instruction, he came to recognise the One he had been waiting for. His obedience brought him into greater revelation. The very assignment God gave him became the pathway to knowing Christ more deeply. The same principle remains true today. Every step of genuine obedience unveils another dimension of God’s purpose and person. When you obey, you will know what you did not know, see what you could not see, and understand what you could not have understood apart from that act of obedience.

Do you love God?

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. [ 1 John 5:3 NKJV ]

After His resurrection, the Lord Jesus met Peter and asked him the same question three times: “Do you love Me?” Peter was grieved by the repeated question, yet the true significance of Christ’s words is revealed in what followed each time: an instruction. Jesus was teaching Peter a timeless truth: love is the foundation of obedience. We do not obey Christ merely to prove that we love Him; rather, genuine love for Him naturally expresses itself through obedience. Love is the root, and obedience is its fruit. Where love is absent, God’s commands feel burdensome, restrictive, and difficult to keep. But wherever love is present, even sacrifice becomes a joy. Those who truly love do not constantly complain about the cost. Their affection outweighs their discomfort, and what would have seemed unbearable becomes a willing offering. This is why God first calls us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. When He occupies first place in our hearts, obedience ceases to be a heavy obligation and becomes a joyful response. Love transforms duty into delight. If, therefore, you consistently struggle to obey God’s Word, the deeper issue may not be a lack of discipline but a deficiency of love. The solution is not merely to try harder; it is to love Christ more. As your love for Him grows, obedience will no longer be forced—it will become the natural expression of a heart captivated by Him.
