[The Glory Unveiled]
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”[ Matthew 4:6 NKJV ]
Religion is one of the devil’s most potent instruments of deception. Throughout history, countless atrocities have been committed under the banner of religion, with people invoking the name of God to justify what He never approved. Because this strategy has proven so effective, Satan continues to disguise many of his works—the deeds of the flesh, that is, sin—in religious clothing. As a result, people can indulge in all manner of unrighteousness provided it bears some form of religious embellishment. In our day, lust, pride, greed, and countless other temptations are often wrapped in spiritual language and presented as though they are acceptable before God. Many believers accept the package without examining its contents. They are captivated by the wrapping and fail to discern what lies beneath. This is precisely how the devil approached Jesus. After several failed attempts to entice Him to sin, Satan returned with a religious package. He quoted Scripture: “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written…” His objective had not changed. He still sought to lead Jesus into disobedience, but this time he concealed the temptation beneath the language of Scripture. He attempted to make rebellion appear like faith by attaching a biblical quotation to it. But Jesus saw beyond the package. He discerned the deception behind the quotation and answered Scripture with Scripture, rightly interpreting the Father’s will rather than accepting the devil’s distortion. In doing so, He prevailed. The enemy has not changed his methods. He still disguises temptation as spirituality and sin as obedience. Not everything that sounds biblical is from God, and not everyone who quotes Scripture speaks for Him. Spiritual maturity is not merely knowing the Word; it is possessing the discernment to distinguish between God’s truth and Satan’s counterfeit. Until we learn to see beyond the devil’s packaging, we remain vulnerable to the very deception we think we are resisting.
