[The Glory Unveiled]
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. [ James 1:22 NKJV ]
To make an impact in any area of life, certain guiding principles must be embraced and consistently applied. These principles govern outcomes and guarantee the results they were designed to produce. The same is true of the Word of God. Lives are not transformed merely by hearing the Word—whether through reading the Scriptures or listening to them being preached—but by obeying what God has said. This reveals the twofold framework of the transforming power of the Word: it must first be heard and then obeyed. Yet many believers cling to only one side of that framework and wonder why the promised transformation never materialises. The Word that transforms is not merely the Word that is heard; it is the Word that is obeyed. Scripture warns that those who only hear the Word deceive themselves. But what is this deception? It is the false assumption that hearing God’s Word automatically means it has become life within us. We mistake exposure for transformation, information for impartation, and familiarity for obedience. Hearing the Word gives us knowledge of God’s will, but only obedience allows that Word to take root and bear fruit in our lives. James goes on to explain that the one who hears the Word but does not do what it says is like a person who looks at his face in a mirror and, after walking away, immediately forgets what he looks like. In the same way, when we fail to obey the Word, its image is never impressed upon our hearts. We walk away unchanged because what we saw was never imprinted within us. The purpose of the Word is not simply to inform us but to conform us to the image of Christ. Without obedience, we neither reflect what the Word reveals nor produce the fruit it was sent to accomplish. Only when the Word is practised does it become visible in our character, evident in our conduct, and powerful through our lives.
