Fatal flaw

[The Glory Unveiled]

For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. [ James 2:10 KJV ]

The Law of Moses was impossible for man to keep for many reasons, but chief among them is this: one fatal flaw can nullify every previous effort. Under the law, a single offense overshadows a lifetime of obedience. One failure is enough to render every other attempt insufficient. The law is like a chain. It does not matter how strong the individual links are; if just one link breaks, the entire chain is broken. In the same way, the Law of Moses functions as a single unit. To break one command is to become guilty of violating the whole system. This is why James cautions us against placing our confidence in the law. Anyone who seeks to be justified by the law is obligated to keep all of it perfectly. The problem is that one offense is enough to condemn, no matter how many commands have been faithfully observed. One mistake can undo years of effort. Therefore, the law leaves no room for boasting in human ability, because no one can maintain perfect obedience before God. But God, in His mercy, provided a better way. Rather than trusting in our ability to fulfill every requirement of the law, we are invited to trust in Jesus, who fulfilled it perfectly on our behalf. Through faith in Him, His righteousness is credited to us. What we could never accomplish through our own efforts, Christ accomplished through His obedience. Therefore, when Jesus fulfilled all righteousness, we also fulfilled the righteous requirements of the law in Him. His victory became our victory. His obedience became our obedience. His righteousness became our righteousness.
