Put on Christ

[The Glory Unveiled]

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. [ Galatians 3:27 KJV ]

There are different kinds of baptisms mentioned in Scripture. There is John’s baptism, which was a baptism of repentance; there is the baptism of the Holy Spirit; and there are other references to baptisms in the Bible. Yet among them, water baptism carries a profound revelation for every believer. Ultimately, it is not merely the act or method of baptism that matters, but the revelation behind it. Water baptism in Christ is a declaration of death and resurrection. When a believer goes down into the water, it is a public testimony that they have died to sin and to the old nature that once ruled them. The old person is buried beneath the waters. Then, as they rise out of the water, it is a testimony that they have been raised to life by the power of the Holy Spirit. But they do not rise as the same person they once were. They emerge as a new creation. Their former self has been crucified and buried, and they come forth clothed with a new identity. They put on Christ. This is because, in God’s reckoning, it is not the old person that comes back from the grave—it is Christ’s life that is now manifested in them. Therefore, from that moment onward, they are to live not for themselves, but for the One who now lives through them: Christ Jesus. Scripture describes Christ as One whom we “put on.” Like a garment, He can be embraced or neglected. Though His life has been given to us, we can still choose to walk contrary to that life. Whenever we lay aside Christ in our conduct, attitudes, and desires, we rob ourselves of the very purpose and power of the resurrection. Water baptism is not merely about getting wet; it is about embracing a new life. The old has died. The new has come. Therefore, put on Christ daily like a garment. Let His character clothe your thoughts, His nature govern your actions, and His life be revealed through you. That is the true testimony of one who has risen with Christ.
