[The Glory Unveiled]
And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,[ 1 Corinthians 2:4 NKJV ]
When the apostle Paul was commissioned to carry the gospel to the Gentiles, he was already deeply learned in Judaism. He understood the Torah and the writings of the Old Testament with remarkable depth. He was articulate, disciplined, and trained in the art of structured argument and persuasion. Yet, with all his knowledge, intellect, and eloquence, Paul made a deliberate decision not to rely on them. Very early, he learned that the Word of God already has an opinion. And when the gospel is preached, every other opinion must bow to the verdict of the Word. This matters because human opinions, no matter how intelligent or sincere, have the ability to dilute the purity of the gospel message. The early apostles understood this carefully. They were cautious not to present their personal conclusions as though they were the voice of God. Paul himself declared that his preaching was not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but with the demonstration of the Spirit and of power. Why? Because the power of the Holy Spirit gives expression to the opinion of God. It makes heaven’s verdict plain. Persuasive speech may move people emotionally for a moment, but it is the demonstration of God’s power that binds hearts to Jesus. The power of God confirms what heaven has said. It speaks beyond argument, beyond intellect, and beyond human ability. Personality, intellect, and human perspective must not become louder than the voice of Scripture. The gospel was never designed to be sustained by charisma alone. It is sustained by the Spirit. So the question is not whether you can speak well, debate well, or present well. The real question is this: when you share the gospel, are you imposing your opinion on the Word, or are you allowing the opinion of the Word to speak for itself?
